The Mary Shrine of Saint Luke's Church is now complete. Yesterday a cadre of Boy Scouts finished the installation of the tile floor, the benches, prayer desk, and the setting of wall plaques. The last item to be installed was the brass cross (pictured above), which was the first processional cross of the parish and used for many years in the liturgies of the church.
Two plaques, on which the 10 Commandments are seen, are posted - one on each side of the Madonna and Child carving - while a third plaque resides over the entrance of the Shrine, and can be seen as one leaves the building. On this plaque Jesus' words are given, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
On Sunday, December 12th, being the third Sunday in Advent, we will dedicate the Mary Shrine upon the conclusion of the 10 am Pontifical Mass. It will be a very special day, as we will also be administering the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Confirmation - God willing!
Created around the Madonna and Child carving by artist Robert Lobdell, who re-presented the Southwest Mission Style in his work magnificently, the Mary Shrine is an absolutely unique and stunning addition to the parish, and provides an outdoor meditation area for pilgrims to the parish. So, on your next visit to Sedona, do stop by for some prayer and holy time at this most sacred place.
The Church is open for private prayer and meditation each weekday (Monday - Friday) from 7:30 am - 3:00 pm, while the courtyard and Mary Shrine are accessible from dawn to dusk daily.
The parish is also a grand place for capturing magnificent pictures of the sunset, as it splashes on the red rocks of beautiful Sedona. (For more information on picture-taking of both sunrises and sunsets at Saint Luke's, click HERE)
