A visit I'll always remember...

Years ago I went to Washington D.C. for a national gathering of clergy. I flew into Reagan Airport (National, then, of course) and was picked up by my hosts, who promptly took me - against my will, I might add - to the Vietnam War Memorial... the Wall.

It was a cold, wet night, and I remember standing there, looking at some of the buddies I knew whose names were on the wall, and feeling both sad and angry while looking down at the Capitol... Old men make wars, young men die in them.

The next day I went to Arlington National Cemetery, to put some roses on a World War I Veteran's grave - George Schoenberger - who was a nonagenarian parishioner of mine, and whose wife Alice asked me to make the visitation. To say the least, it was an honor to do so.

I will always remember that trip.

Today we recall those who served and those who have died. Jack James is the one who "dogs" me from my home town - Mason City, Iowa. Please share those whom you remember this day, also.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.
And may Light Perpetual shine upon them. Amen.

25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

QUESTION(S) - Zechariah's disbelief made him mute. (V. 20) How has my disbelief inhibited me in the past? Elisabeth, after becoming pregnant, said that God had taken away her reproach among men (V. 25) - that is to say, she believed that her prior barrenness was a sign of divine disfavour, and that therefore her being with child was a blessing from God. How have times changed, in this regard? Are there some who act as if pregnancy is the "reproach"?

EVENING PRAYER

The First Lesson

Ezra 1:1-8

1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

QUESTION(S) - Am I helping to rebuild God's house, or do I merely watch as others work?

The Second Lesson

Acts 7:1-16

1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee.

QUESTION(S) - Peter says our inheritance is reserved in heaven for us. (V. 4) Do I sometimes act as if I already have it?

1 The pride of the height, the clear firmament, the beauty of heaven, with his glorious shew;

QUESTION(S) - When was the last time I felt God's presence and glory in the same way as the writer of this passage did?

Second Lesson

Ephesians 4:1-16

3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Trinity Sunday @ St Luke's

Tomorrow is a "full" day of worship and adoration for us at Saint Luke's. Not only is it Trinity Sunday, and therefore a very special day in the Church Kalendar, but it is also Memorial Day weekend.

We will be worshiping the Trinity, embracing both the temporal and spiritual natures of our common life in Christ, and remembering those who gave their lives in defense of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America.

The Memorial Day weekend prayer follows, and it is good to include in our personal prayers throughout the weekend -

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead; We give thee thanks for all those thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence, that the good work which thou hast begun in them may be perfected; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

Sunday will be marked by special hymns, including "Faith of our Fathers," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "God Bless Our Native Land," to name but three!

Second Lesson

QUESTION(S) - Did I succeed in holding to the faith today? How close did I come to fulfilling verse 11? Where didn't I? Why?

Obeying God... or Man?

One "life subject" that is always alive and feisty is that of human sexuality.

A newly posted news article dealing with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the Armed Forces begins with the following:

"More than 40 retired military chaplains warned President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates that allowing gays to serve openly in the military will force current chaplains to choose between obeying God or men."

That is a correct observation, but one which sadly does not excite many Americans, as it's not "cool" to be a champion of Christian morality and beliefs, and if you do stand up regarding this subject, you'll be labeled old fashioned, intolerant, or homophobic. Indeed?

There's another good work which examines the homosexual movement as a whole, and wrestles with the question, "how have the homosexuals been able to accomplish so many of their goals in the public life?"

It's called "The Homosexual Movement - A Response by the Ramsey Colloquium," and is found HERE. The Ramsey Colloquium is a group of Jewish and Christian theologians, ethicists, philosophers, and scholars that meets periodically to consider questions of morality, religion, and public life.

This particular article is both thought-provoking and insightful, and was first published in the March 1994 issue of First Things: A Monthly Journal of Religion and Public Life. Here's a quote from the work:

Our society is, we fear, progressing precisely in the manner given poetic expression by Alexander Pope.

Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As to be hated needs but to be seen
Yet seen too often, familiar with her face,
we first endure, then pity, then embrace.

To endure (tolerance), to pity (compassion), to embrace (affirmation): that is the sequence of change in attitude and judgment that has been advanced by the gay and lesbian movement with notable success.

2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:

13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ.

15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart.

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.

17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

QUESTION(S) - How can I change today, in order to more closely resemble the image of the glory of the Lord? (V. 18)

First Lesson

Isaiah 52:1-10

1 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

3 For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

4 For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

8 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

QUESTION(S) - Are my feet beautiful? (V 7) What must I do in life, in order to make them so? When people looked at me today, was there any inkling of the salvation of our God (V. 10) for them to see ?

Second Lesson

Acts 6

1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

QUESTION(S) - What is the purpose and ministry of the diaconate? Stephen's face "was as it had been the face of an angel." (V. 15) When folk look at me, do they catch a bit of heaven in my countenance?
