MORNING PRAYER

First Lesson
Isaiah 44:1-8, 21-23
1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
5 One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.
6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

QUESTION(S) - Isaiah 44:1-8, 21-23. How's my fear? (V. 2,8) Am I God's servant, like Jacob and Israel? (V. 21) Has God done verse 22 for me, also?

Second Lesson
Galatians 5:16-25
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

QUESTION(S) - Galatians 5:16-25. Write the fruits of the Spirit (V. 22,23) on a piece of paper, and carry it with you all day. Do the same with the works of the flesh (V. 19-21). At the end of the day, see which works were observed the most during the day, and also which fruits did you experience/call upon most?

EVENING PRAYER

First Lesson
Wisdom 11:21-12:2
21 For thou canst shew thy great strength at all times when thou wilt; and who may withstand the power of thine arm?
22 For the whole world before thee is as a little grain of the balance, yea, as a drop of the morning dew that falleth down upon the earth.
23 But thou hast mercy upon all; for thou canst do all things, and winkest at the sins of men, because they should amend.
24 For thou lovest all the things that are, and abhorrest nothing which thou hast made: for never wouldest thou have made any thing, if thou hadst hated it.
25 And how could any thing have endured, if it had not been thy will? or been preserved, if not called by thee?
26 But thou sparest all: for they are thine, O Lord, thou lover of souls.
1 For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things.
2 Therefore chastenest thou them by little and little that offend, and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.

QUESTION(S) - Did God try to correct me "little by little" (V. 2) today? How so? What did I do?


Second Lesson
Acts 5:29-42
29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

QUESTION(S) - Today, did I obey God or man? (V. 29) Do I suffer shame for the Name of Jesus as the apostles did? (V. 41) If not, why not? Are such experiences only historical to the faith, not happening in our day?

Today's Saint (May 26): Augustine of Canterbury

Saint Augustine (d. 604 or 605) was a Benedictine monk, who, at the command of St. Gregory the Great, went to Great Britain in 596 to Christianize the heathen.

Along with St. Gregory, Augustine is often considered an "apostle" of England, for the the two of them were largely responsible for its conversion. On one Christmas day, Augustine converted Ethelbert, King of Kent, along with several thousand persons. After founding Canterbury, he would later rule there as the archbishop.

Pray that God raises up men in our time so as to bring all men unto Our Lord. "The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest." (The day's gospel, page E 62, The People's Anglican Missal)

QUESTION(S) - Have I given my mind to the law of God? (V. 1) What stops me from doing so? Is the Lord willing to fill me with His wisdom? (V. 6) Has He? How often do I read and study holy writ? How much time do I give to the study of scripture?

Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 2
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

QUESTION(S) - 1 Corinthians 2. Whose mind do I operate from, most often - man's mind or Christ's? (V. 16)

Acts 5:12-28. Would I have done what the angel said to do, had he been speaking to me in verse 20? If I were Peter, how would I have felt as the high priest spoke? (V. 28)

QUESTION(S) - Was I reformed and saved by wisdom today? (V. 17, 18)

Second Lesson
Acts 5:12-28
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)

25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.
27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.

QUESTION(S) - Would I have done what the angel said to do, had he been speaking to me in verse 20? If I were Peter, how would I have felt as the high priest spoke? (V. 28)

Rose Garden Work

The rose garden work is progressing, and at this time we are fixing leaky hoses, and have begun planning for the restoration of the tiered brick walls of the garden.

We need your help in this endeavor. In order to boost up the tiers one more level of bricks, so that we might level things out and add soil, etcetera, we will be purchasing 130 bricks - the kind which we already have in the garden.

The cost will be approximately $400.00.

Will you help in this endeavor by contributing to the "Brick Fund?"

We will keep everyone posted on a weekly basis how we are coming insofar as contributions are concerned, and when we have the full amount "in hand," the bricks will be purchased and placed in the garden.

As most everyone knows, God has blessed us with the most beautiful church AND setting in Northern Arizona. Please contribute to this worthwhile cause, and our beautiful church will get more lovely as her days increase!!!

Use the "Special Offering" envelopes found at the back of the church, for your Brick Fund contributions.

QUESTION(S) - What spiritual gifts have I been given? What part of the body of Christ am I? What manifestation of the Spirit have I been given? (V. 7)

QUESTION(S) - How am I at delegating responsibility? Do I envy another's gifts?

Second Lesson
Acts 4:23-37
23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

QUESTION(S) - The apostles prayed for boldness in their preaching. (V. 29) Do I ask God for help, in my ministry? The apostles gave their testimony with great power (V. 33). Is power defined in the same way today by all people? How so?

Today's Saint (May 24): Vincent of Lerins

Saint Vincent of Lerins was a priest monk who lived on the island of Lerins during the fifth century.

He wrote Commonitorium, which contains what has become known as the Vincentian Canon, the three-fold test of Catholicity: quod ubique, quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est - what has been believed everywhere, always and by all.

He died before 450 a.d.

The following is quoted from Commonitorium:

"Is there to be no development of religion in the Church of Christ? Certainly, there is to be development and on the largest scale.

"Who can be so grudging to men, so full of hate for God, as to try to prevent it? But it must truly be development of the faith, not alteration of the faith. Development means that each thing expands to be itself, while alteration means that a thing is changed from one thing into another.

"The understanding, knowledge and wisdom of one and all, of individuals as well as of the whole Church, ought then to make great and vigorous progress with the passing of the ages and the centuries, but only along its own line of development, that is, with the same doctrine, the same meaning and the same import.

"The religion of souls should follow the law of development of bodies. Though bodies develop and unfold their component parts with the passing of the years, they always remain what they were. There is a great difference between the flower of childhood and the maturity of age, but those who become old are the very same people who were once young. Though the condition and appearance of one and the same individual may change, it is one and the same nature, one and the same person.

"The tiny members of unweaned children and the grown members of young men are still the same members. Men have the same number of limbs as children. Whatever develops at a later age was already present in seminal form; there is nothing new in old age that was not already latent in childhood.

"There is no doubt, then, that the legitimate and correct rule of development, the established and wonderful order of growth, is this: in older people the fullness of years always brings to completion those members and forms that the wisdom of the Creator fashioned beforehand in their earlier years.

"If, however, the human form were to turn into some shape that did not belong to its own nature, or even if something were added to the sum of its members or subtracted from it, the whole body would necessarily perish or become grotesque or at least be enfeebled. In the same way, the doctrine of the Christian religion should properly follow these laws of development, that is, by becoming firmer over the years, more ample in the course of time, more exalted as it advances in age.

"In ancient times our ancestors sowed the good seed in the harvest field of the Church. It would be very wrong and unfitting if we, their descendants, were to reap, not the genuine wheat of truth but the intrusive growth of error.

"On the contrary, what is right and fitting is this: there should be no inconsistency between first and last, but we should reap true doctrine from the growth of true teaching, so that when, in the course of time, those first sowings yield an increase it may flourish and be tended in our day also."

5 For I thy servant and son of thine handmaid am a feeble person, and of a short time, and too young for the understanding of judgment and laws.
6 For though a man be never so perfect among the children of men, yet if thy wisdom be not with him, he shall be nothing regarded.

QUESTION(S) - When was the last time I asked God to give me more of His wisdom? (V. 4)


Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 3:9-17
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

QUESTION(S) - 1 Corinthians 3:9-17. Do my life actions reflect that I believe I am God's building (V. 9) and temple (V. 17)? Am I an inhabitable or condemned one? Why?


EVENING PRAYER

First Lesson
Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

QUESTION(S) - Is God's law written in my heart, (V. 33) or only in an outward fashion? How close are we today, to that time described in verse 34?

Second Lesson
Acts 4:13-22
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shown.

QUESTION(S) - Have I ever done a notable miracle (V. 16)? When was the last time I asked God for boldness the likes possessed by Peter and John? By God's grace, can I ever hope to be so bold? What would change in my life?
