Today's Headlines for Evening Prayer

First Reading:  Job 5:8-18.
Elephaz speaks for the first time, not only suggesting that Job take his cause to God, but that the LORD will make things right, and that "happy is the man whom God correcteth..."

2nd Reading: Matthew 12:31-50.
All manner of sin shall be forgiven, save "blasphemy against the Holy Ghost." The evil speak and do evil out of the heart, the good speak and do good things out of the heart.    Words both justify and condemn.  As there was hope for the Ninevites when Jonah visited them, so, too, is repentance available via the Word of God.

Today's Headlines for Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer headlines...

1st reading: 1 Kings 12:25-33.
Jeroboam (1st King of the Northern Israelite kingdom of Israel after Solomon's death & the split of the united kingdom) made 2 golden calves as symbols of God, & encouraged his people to worship them instead of traveling to Jerusalem and Solomon's temple. They fell for it, perhaps because of the convenient proximity to their home?  Who wants to go on a long trip, when a short one is available?

2nd reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12.
Paul speaks of being deceived by others, who place themselves above God, and draw folk away from the truth and goodness.  To be expected, "because they received not the love of the truth."
