Is it the "Real Deal?"

Ever wonder about some of the TV evangelists? Are they preaching the Gospel, or have they made their own version that "sells" more easily?

An new article on the web addresses this issue, and in particular the work of the well-known fellow named Joel Osteen. Here are a few quotes from this hard-hitting piece by Professor Michael Horton:
"We are swimming in a sea of narcissistic moralism: an 'easy-listening' version of salvation by self-help.

"This is what we might call the false gospel of 'God-Loves-You-Anyway.' There's no need for Christ as our mediator... God is our buddy. He just wants us to be happy, and the Bible gives us the roadmap."
The article is both a good read and very insightful. It's entitled "Joel Osteen and the Glory Story: A Case Study," (Yes, that's the link to it!) and is well worth the time you'll take to read it, so enjoy!

Michael S. Horton is a Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary in Southern California.

In a few days we'll be sending out our newsletter for the month of May, and in it you'll notice a new mailing address for the church.

We've decided that we ought to be "done with" driving to the main Sedona post office to get our mail, so here's the new address for all parish correspondence via USPS, effective immediately:

Going on holiday?

If you are planning a vacation this Summer, don't forget "check in" with the worship of almighty God whilst on holiday.

It's always good to visit different parishes when you're "on the road," as it oftentimes has the added benefit of allowing you to appreciate your parish church more fully.

Also, don't forget to take care of your pledge before leaving, as bills continue throughout the time when you're out of town!

And finally, let us know you are on holiday, and we'll pray for a safe journey and a joyous vacation for you and yours.

Unruly Wills & Affections

That's the topic of next Sunday's sermon at Saint Luke's.

In preparation, read the propers for next Sunday (4th Sunday after Trinity), and think on how they might apply to your life - what instances, inclinations and the like.

There will also be two baptisms at the principal 10am Mass, and we bid your prayers for the Ramando family of Cottonwood, AZ, as they prepare for that most holy event for their son and daughter.

The roses have arrived!

Yes, the rose bushes are flourishing, and already have innumerable blossomings.

Somehow, they seemed to all "pop out" together this year, so we don't have the "first bloom" picture as we have had in years past.

However, we've the beauty of our Rose Garden, which will continue to delight us throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons.

The abve picture is but an example of the garden's beauty. This particular rose is called Lulu, so dubbed last year by me in thanksgiving for a particularly beautiful time in the life of our parish!

Next Sunday - the feast of St Mark

Yes, Mark's feast day is on April 25 - next Sunday - so we'll be celebrating it at the morning masses.

In preparation, read the day's propers, and think about how you "fit in" as Christ's disciple. The Catholic Encyclopedia article on Mark is also helpful, and is found HERE.

In the day's gospel reading from John, Jesus said to His disciples, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit." Think on your "fruitfulness," and how it might, by God's grace, be expanded.

The above Icon of Mark writing his gospel is reminiscent of our own Icon of Saint Luke, and is probably also a Russian Icon.

Sports and the Faith

Richard Emrich, a retired ECUSA Bishop who spent his last years in Arizona and whom I came to know and love, once preached a sermon entitled "The Theology of Golf."

At first hearing, that may sound a bit peculiar, but it was both edifying and encouraging.

I've come across an article of a like-minded connection between Christianity and the national pastime baseball, which F. Scott Fitzgerald called the faith of 50 million People. (I think that may be a "low ball" number!)

In any event, the article, which is from our friends at the Religious News Service, is a good read, and if you like baseball, here's the LINK.

The above picture is posted with the article and shows Pastor Rick Warren delivering an Easter Sermon at Anaheim Stadium last year, which was - of course! - tabbed as "the sermon on the mound."

Keeping abreast of religious news

There's a source on the internet that will keep you up to date on many religious stories.

It's called the Religious News Service, and today's "headline" is about our step-sister, ECUSA.

The story tells about a gal who's made some "Barbie the priestess" outfits, and although not really "new" news (I believe a few years ago there was a Deacon Ken and his "friend" Steve phenomenon) it does reflect the "cutting edge" of that denomination.

Here's the Link... enjoy the other free articles of Religious News Service, and don't forget to thank God that He brought us out of the fleshpots of ECUSA!

A milestone for our Videos

Last week we passed the 40,000 mark for our video views on YouTube!

Our first video was posted on June 12, 2008, and was entitled "Building A Church For God's Glory in Sedona AZ (1987 - 2007)"

Thanks to all who are using our channel, and continue to pray for a flourishing ministry for God's greater glory - both in our parish and it's "electronic" ministry via YouTube!

The first rose?

Have we had the first rose bush blossoming at Saint Luke's?

Not yet, but it should be happening within a few weeks.

The accompanying picture shows the "unknown" flowers located at the church gate.

Years ago someone planted the three bulbs, and every year - without much adieu or care on our part, the flowers blossom and then "fade away" during the heat of the Arizona sun.

We'll keep watch for the first rose bush blooming, and will let you know when it happens.

For Now, enjoy the "wild flowers" at Saint Luke's Church!

The power of Christ's blood

"If we wish to understand the power of Christ’s blood, we should go back to the ancient account of its prefiguration in Egypt. 'Sacrifice a lamb without blemish,' commanded Moses, 'and sprinkle its blood on your doors.'

"If we were to ask him what he meant, and how the blood of an irrational beast could possibly save men endowed with reason, his answer would be that the saving power lies not in the blood itself, but in the fact that it is a sign of the Lord’s blood.

"In those days, when the destroying angel saw the blood on the doors he did not dare to enter, so how much less will the devil approach now when he sees, not that figurative blood on the doors, but the true blood on the lips of believers, the doors of the temple of Christ.

"If you desire further proof of the power of this blood, remember where it came from, how it ran down from the cross, flowing from the Master’s side.

"The gospel records that when Christ was dead, but still hung on the cross, a soldier came and pierced his side with a lance and immediately there poured out water and blood. Now the water was a symbol of baptism and the blood, of the holy Eucharist.

"The soldier pierced the Lord’s side, he breached the wall of the sacred temple, and I have found the treasure and made it my own. So also with the lamb: the Jews sacrificed the victim and I have been saved by it.

“'There flowed from his side water and blood.' Beloved, do not pass over this mystery without thought; it has yet another hidden meaning, which I will explain to you. I said that water and blood symbolised baptism and the holy Eucharist.

From these two sacraments the Church is born: from baptism, 'the cleansing water that gives rebirth and renewal through the Holy Spirit,' and from the holy Eucharist.

'Since the symbols of baptism and the Eucharist flowed from his side, it was from his side that Christ fashioned the Church, as he had fashioned Eve from the side of Adam Moses gives a hint of this when he tells the story of the first man and makes him exclaim: 'Bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh!'

'As God then took a rib from Adam’s side to fashion a woman, so Christ has given us blood and water from his side to fashion the Church. God took the rib when Adam was in a deep sleep, and in the same way Christ gave us the blood and the water after his own death.

"Do you understand, then, how Christ has united his bride to himself and what food he gives us all to eat? By one and the same food we are both brought into being and nourished. As a woman nourishes her child with her own blood and milk, so does Christ unceasingly nourish with his own blood those to whom he himself has given life."
